DETROIT — Somehow or other, the Red Wings lost Saturday to the New York Rangers, 4-0.
The Wings outshot the Rangers 37-24, totally controlled the puck and game for stretches, but couldn't get anything past Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick.
Jimmy Vesey and Artemi Panarin scored 48 seconds apart late in the second period, after the Wings had dominated the second period, to extend the lead to 3-0.
Vesey found himself open in the slot and converted Sam Carrick's feed from behind the net at 16:52 for his first goal of the season. Panarin then scored his 10th, beating goaltender Ville Husso from a sharp angle 48 seconds later.
Chris Kreider (power play) opened the scoring in the first period for New York and Reilly Smith made it 4-0 with an empty-net goal.
Husso stopped 20 shots in his first game back for the Wings since being recalled Friday from Grand Rapids after Alex Lyon was (lower-body) was injured in practice.
The Wings (6-7-1) have scored two or fewer goals in five of their last six games, having won two of those games (2-3-1).
The Wings completely dominated the middle 20 minutes, outshooting the Rangers 19-8 but not able to get anything behind Quick.
Patrick Kane hit a goal post (Moritz Seider hit one in the first period) and Vladimir Tarasenko was denied by Quick, wide open in the slot.
The Wings failed to convert on two power plays, while the Rangers were one-for-two.
Quick had a highlight reel stop on Jonatan Berggren on a two-one-rush in the third period, keeping the Wings off the scoreboard.
The Wings welcomed back forward Tyler Motte to the lineup after he missed the last nine games with an upper-body injury. As Motte entered the lineup, Joe Veleno became a healthy scratch for the first time this season.
